Dental Month

February has been declared "Veterinary Dental Care Month" across Canada.  Dental care is essential in preventing infection of the gums and teeth, which could ultimately spread through the blood stream causing disease throughout the body.  It is estimated that by the age of 3 greater than 60% of dogs and cats suffer from some degree of dental disease.  The most common dental disease is periodontal disease.  This is caused by bacteria being carried up under the gumline by plaque and tartar accumulation, which eventually causes infection around the roots of the teeth (abscesses).  Be aware that pets may not show outward signs of pain associated with infections of the teeth, or may only seem less active or less affectionate.

In order to remove tartar from under the gumline a general anesthetic is required, as dogs and cats will not tolerate teeth cleaning like human beings do.  In support of Veterinary Dental Care Month, and recognizing the importance of dental care, we are reducing the fee for a complete dental cleaning procedure including pre-anesthetic bloodwork during the month of February.
